When I first heard that Snoop Dogg was set to perform at Donald Trump’s inaugural ball, my initial reaction was one of curiosity. Snoop has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics, even going so far as to depict the former president in a controversial music video. So why, after years of public disdain, would he choose to take the stage at this moment?

Truce?

For many, this decision feels like a betrayal. Social media has erupted with outrage, with people calling Snoop a sellout, questioning his integrity, and criticizing his choice to align—at least for one night—with a man they feel has fueled division. But I see it differently. I see it as an opportunity for healing.

America has been deeply fractured for years, and regardless of political affiliation, we must acknowledge that the only way forward is together. If we spend our time deepening the divide—drawing harder lines in the sand and refusing to engage with those who think differently—we will never progress. Eventually, we must learn to coexist, to find common ground, and, when possible, to build bridges.

Snoop’s performance might not be an endorsement of Trump’s policies, past actions, or rhetoric. It might simply be a business decision. But it also sends a message: we can disagree, even vehemently, and still engage in the same space. If a longtime critic like Snoop Dogg can step onto that stage, maybe there’s hope that the rest of us can find a way to meet in the middle.

Of course, I’m not naive. Trump’s history—his inflammatory remarks, his treatment of women, and the policies that have disproportionately affected marginalized communities—cannot be ignored. His presidency left a lasting impact, and for many, that pain is still fresh. But I also believe in redemption, in the idea that people can evolve. If Trump truly wants to reshape his legacy, moments like this—where bridges, however small, are being built—matter.

Whether this is a symbolic step toward unity or just another business move remains to be seen. But I choose to be hopeful. Hopeful that this moment signals a shift, however slight, toward healing. Hopeful that our country can begin to have the difficult conversations necessary for progress. Hopeful that, even in the most unlikely of circumstances, we can find ways to move forward—together.
