There are moments at music festivals when everything slows down just enough for real connection—no backstage passes, no publicists, just a casual chat with an artist on the rise. That’s what happened at Barefoot Country Music Fest when I ran into Kevin Smiley, an up-and-coming country artist with a name—and energy—you won’t forget.
I approached him in the aftermath of a lively set, caught in a swirl of fan gratitude, Sharpies, and set lists. He greeted everyone with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like you’ve known him for years. One fan handed over a set list—“This one was mine,” he laughed, “you can tell by the bad handwriting.” Another gushed that Kevin was “on my wife’s radar,” to which he replied with his signature grin, “That’s even better.”

But what struck me most was how down-to-earth Kevin was, even as the buzz around him grew. I asked if he’d be up for a lightning round—Fast Tracks, five quick questions for my music blog. He said yes without hesitation.
Here’s what we captured:
🎤 Five Fast Tracks with Kevin Smiley
1. The Jersey Shore has its own vibe. What’s your favorite part about playing BCMF or being by the beach?
“My dad’s from Jersey, so this is my first time playing here. That makes it really special.”
2. Country music has exploded in recent years. Why do you think it’s drawing more people in?
“Realistic lyrics. People want something they can relate to.”
3. What’s one song in your set that always hits different when played live?
“‘Last Rodeo’—for sure. That one just lands every time.”
4. If fans only remembered one thing from your set today, what would you want it to be?
“My name.” (Mission accomplished, Kevin.)
5. Quick pick: An artist you’d most like to collaborate with?
“Jelly Roll.” (Yes. A thousand times yes.)
Kevin Smiley’s name might be easy to remember, but it’s his authenticity, humor, and that signature smile that really make him stand out. If you haven’t listened to “Last Rodeo” yet, add it to your playlist. And keep an eye out—Kevin’s star is rising, and if this Jersey debut is any sign, he’s just getting started.
